Resources

Below are resources, links, and materials. Please note where specific exercises are listed since a great deal of these materials are SPECIFIC to certain groups/individuals. Don't just print everything and start working on it, work on what we have discussed and if there is a progression noted please follow it carefully.

Happy practicing.

Note: Number in parenthesis are in regards to what skill set is being developed. See "building my primary session" for details. (coming soon)

Listening List (please note this will change from time to time.)

Listening is a tremendously important exercise, it helps us develop our own ideas of what "horn sound" is. Listen to as much as you can, fill your head with music of all types and pay close attention to different schools of playing. Chicago, Vienna, Berlin, etc.. what makes each one unique? What can you borrow from each to help cultivate your own mental image of horn? Use the best playback you have available (studio monitors, headphones, etc. the better the sound the more you can learn.)

Examples
Vienna horns: Example 1. Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5
Berlin horns: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.
American Horn Quartet: Example 1, Example 2
Chicago Symphony Brass: Example 1

Symphonic Examples
Chicago: Tchiak 4 . Mahler 5 (maybe one of the most famous recordings, with Dale), Mahler 7, Shosty 7 ending. Beethoven 9 (4th horn solo all the way to 47).
